CELT
What is the CELT course?
The CELT (Certificate in English Language Teaching) course is an internationally recognised TEFL certificate which will qualify you to teach English to foreign students. It is fully recognised by ACELS (Advisory Council for English language Schools in Ireland).
What do I need to be an English Teacher?
- You need to be Curious.
There is no better way to get an insight into this increasingly connected world than by teaching English to foreign students. The English teacher's job is to help students explain their ideas and experiences to each other and in the average English classroom you will see French students exchange recipes with Koreans, you will hear Brazilians disagree with Germans about fashion and music, and you will find yourself moderating debates about the whole range of issues that we all hold in common. Whether you teach a multinational classes in an English speaking country, or a single nationality abroad, you are going get the kind of cultural exposure that no amount of backpacking can ever equal.
- You need practical training.
There is a whole range of teacher training available under the generic banner of TEFL and much of it is of dubious value. The essential question to ask is, "How many hours of teaching real students will we get?". This course gives every trainee six full hours supervised teaching practice with extensive work on planning and preparation, as well as exposure to a range of levels and lesson types. We will get you teaching from the beginning in order to give you the context you need to understand the relevance what you find out about teaching and language. The aim of the course is to send you out with the understanding the principles and experience of them in practice that you need to start teaching. You are not prepared to do it until you have done it.
- You need a recognised qualification.
Every year, recognised language schools programme have to turn away several applicants who have unrecognised qualifications. All reputable English schools must follow strict guidelines and can only recruit teachers with such recognised qualifications. The Certificate in English Language Teaching (CELT) is moderated in Ireland for the Department of Education by ACELS/NQAI. That means that an outside body checks the standards of our CELT courses, with both on site and documentation inspections, so that you can be sure that the standards of tuition are kept up, the assessment procedures are fair, and that you course is run according to best practice.
- And you need to attend an induction day to find out more.
At the induction day we will give you some written task to do which will help you explore your ideas about teaching and your awareness of how the English language works. We will also discuss the nature of the course and answer any questions you have in full. The event will take about two hours all together and will give you all the information you need about the opportunities that teaching offers in order to help you make a fully informed decision about this course being the best one for you.
