In 35 years, what a difference one can make.

In June 2011, a serious fire broke out at our language school, Language in Dublin, in Dun Laoghaire. Luckily, no-one was hurt, but unfortunately there was some extensive damage to the premises, a listed Georgian building at Clarinda Park.  This happened at our busiest time of the year and several of our rooms were temporarily out of action.

Everyone rolled up their sleeves and did their best to get on with things but we couldn’t have done it without the support we received from other local businesses, which helped us get back on our feet and reminded us of the importance of local community. This sense really seems to thrive in Dun Laoghaire and its surroundings, a testament to the people and businesses there.

We have since refurbished the school and, thankfully, our business is thriving, so we have decided to give something back to the community that helped us in our hour of need, by working on a project to distribute ‘Dun Laoghaire Discount Cards’ to some of the local businesses. This is a scheme that will hopefully promote local commerce.

Every year we have approximately 8,000 touristic visitors going through our hostel (Marina House at Old Dun Leary Road) and approximately 2000 Adult and Junior foreign students going through the doors of our language school. We’d estimate that the hostel visitors spend about € 1,000,000 per year and that the language students spend approximately €3,000,000 in the area in accommodation, food and drink and in local amenities and sightseeing.

The manager of Marina House, Ricardo Sales, has contacted a small number of local businesses (cafes, pubs, book shops etc) and has asked for a small contribution to cover the cost of getting these discount cards designed and printed for distribution to every student in the school and every guest in the hostel. The pilot scheme is for 1000 cards and if it works well, we’ll be hoping to extend to some other local businesses.

We would be delighted if you would join us for a glass of prosecco and a bite to eat with an international flavour to celebrate the launch of our ‘Dun Laoghaire Discount Card’ scheme and also to mark how far we have come in the year since the fire, which coincides with our 35th year in business.
